Biography

·         Born in Paris in 1867 to a wealthy family of industrialists

·         Studied originally to be in the military, but contracted TB, ending military ambitions

·         Began studying at the Paris Conservatory in 1890, studying composition with Massenet

·         Studying modal music and baroque counterpoint left lasting impressions in his work

·         He studied with Fauré in 1896, which also left a lasting impact on his music

·         He was married in 1903, and soon after started to face chronic financial problems (despite his wealthy background)

·         Wrote for the Chronique des arts from 1909 as a critic

·         Became a music theorist in 1915 (continuing for the rest of his life)

·         In 1909 he helped found the Société Musicale Indépendante with Ravel and F. Schmitt

·         During the 1920s his reputation grew as a composer and theorist

·         In the 1930s his reputation was almost entirely that of a theorist

·         He lived out the rest of his life mostly as a teacher, lecturing in the USA in 1918-19, 1928, 1929, and 1937, and around Paris regularly.

·         He died at his country home in France in 1950.

Orchestral Music

Charles Koechlin (1867-1950) HYMNE À LA NUIT (op. 48 n° 1) Cette pièce fut composée en 1908 avant d'être orchestrée en 1911. Elle constituait à l'origine la première partie du poème symphonique "L'Été" mais fut par la suite intégrée à la "Symphonie d'hymnes" et connut enfin sa première audition en 1938, sous la baguette de Roger Désormière.
